1st Grow -- Grobo Start to Grobo

My first grow has started! I purchased a used Grobo solid from a buddy of mine, and I’m currently waiting for the new PH probe and diagnostic checkup. Eager to get started, I purchased a Grobo start and hope to shave down on my total grow times. I have just a few questions that I haven’t seen answered, but please forgive me if they have been.

  1. How long should I leave the humidity dome on my little guy? I started it last night after reading that was wise so that ambient lighting throughout the day would keep it going.

  2. I’m hoping to start it here for 6 weeks and the transplant it to my Grobo solid. Once it finishes in the Grobo solid, I am hoping to have another one coming right behind it from the Grobo Start. Is there an alternative place or machine that can be used for drying the buds? Using the Grobo solid to hang and dry would just slow down my process slightly.

Thanks everyone!

Welcome aboard Cory!
You should remove the dome after two leaves have grown.
Every living thing needs down time, plants needs darkness to flourish and sleep!
You an dry any place that I cool and preferably dark with a fan circulating the air, not directly on the plant to dry it out too much.

Thank you for the response! The camaraderie in this forum is pretty neat. After reading more threads, I’m a little worried about how long I’ll be able to stay in my Grobo Start. It’s a 71 day Strawberry Nuggets auto flower, and I’ve been reading that it will begin to flower between 2 to 4 weeks.

Hopefully I’ll be able to recalibrate and have my Grobo Solid up and running by then. I was hoping to leave it on the Grobo Start for 6 weeks but I don’t know if that’s feasible with the auto flower.

Yeah autos are on there own time! That would have worked for a photoperiod but leaving an auto in the start is not recommended.
Hopefully you won’t have to leave it longer than two weeks.

Lol! @SilverGrobo you crack me up! The water level picture you made is hilarious… the dolphin… the hummingbird… but the best is the Water tap and the butterfly lol! Love it!

Hey there! Are my water levels too low already? I started with 650 ML like the YouTube video suggested, but I did notice how low my floating buoy is. In both the YouTube video and the instruction manual — the floating buoy seems to be much higher. Am I missing something here? I assume the Grobo app will prompt me when to put in more water.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I’m pretty sure you have to monitor the level yourself and fill it when the buoy drops. The directions say to check the water level 1-2 times a week and change every 7-10 days

Thank you for the reply! Sorry – I was looking from my phone, and I couldn’t tell that you had already indicated my water levels were low. It’s a little easier to keep up with the thread on a computer. I’ll add water as soon as I’m home. I really appreciate your insight.

Update — my girlfriend added water while I was at work. Hopefully this isn’t too much water.

Anyone with experience on the Starts — what’s the perfect level for the buoy to sit at? I wish there was a line marked on it. Perhaps I’ll draw my own once I figure it out.

That was the one thing missing for me also because its very easy to overfill.
I dont think it will hurt anything though because my pod stays soaked and I haven’t had a issue yet.
I did take my zkittles glue out after 9 days but my cilantro is still inside a soaked pod doing fine.
Fill until the buoy reaches the top or like you said make your own line!

The 650 mL recommended for the nutrient dosage fills the unit perfectly.

I tried mine out today, added a little extra water too and it was still fine. Started to come up to the bottom of the pod holder and that’s about it.

BTW @Bplatinum9 are you planning on taking the cilantro out? Have you noticed that unless you transplant in the Grobo, there’s no way to get the pod out of the holder? I put a cutting that rooted from my Grobo plant in mine, but I realized that I couldn’t take it out and plant it in soil if I wanted to unless I buried the entire pod holder…

Kinda a bummer because this would have been cool to use as a soil plant propagator as an option…

Eventually, I just put it in there to demonstrate growth!
The pod comes out the same way in the start than it does in the grobo!
My cilantro will probably stay in the start for a lot longer, because I plan to grow it and chop it off to eat!
Much like what I had planned for the buttercrunch lettuce that never sprouted.
When growing herbs this is the popular way to grow & use herbs, fresh off the stem!
You can let whatever type of plant grow large enough to fit through the top of the holder and replant it by unscrewing the holder and opening the peat pod. :eyes::seedling:

Hey @Bplatinum9 Do you have the Grobo Start in complete darkness when its lights are off? Wondering if it’s ok to have the Grobo Start in an room with the ceiling lights on most of the day

Is there a reason why the cilantro looks like it’s growing sideways? I just ordered some cilantro seeds

My grobo start is off during lights out at my house.
Its best to have darkness but its not gonna keep plants from growing unless the lighting is bright, direct or always on.
My cilantro is sideways because I pushed it that direction to show the leaf covers.
Have you ever grew cilantro before? I’m not sure its the type of plant that stands up very long!

I’ve never grown cilantro before. Looking forward to figuring it out :joy:

Welcome @daddylonglegs. I’m glad you asked about how long a new seed can stay in a Grobo Start. I’m curious as well. I have a photoperiod grow in transition and am itching to start a new grow in my start. I don’t remember what the recommendation is for when to plant so that the new :seedling: can go into the Grobo at the optimum time and still have time to finish the current grow. I’m looking for maximum efficiency. :paw_prints:

So my first seed never sprouted. This is attempt #2 and I’ve started two seeds that both seem to be at least starting. I’m a tad worried about this 1st girl who is trying to grow directly sideways.

We shall see how she adjusts. Any wisdom from the board?

@daddylonglegs It looks like the seeds may not have been deep enough into the pods. Before placing the seeds in the hole did you poke it with a q-tip, swab, or toothpick? This helps set the seed deeper into the hole.

What we are seeing there are root hairs and I think action should be taken to help the seedling. The seedling may need to be pulled out and planted deeper. @Bplatinum9 performed a surgery transplant that saved the seedling and earned her the title Dr. Greenthumb. Check it out!

Thank you for the help! I’ve done a little surgery myself this morning. I didn’t poke the extra holes into the pod because last time my seed didn’t sprout and I thought that might be the reason why. Turns out the first seed was probably just a dud.

Hopefully this works — do you think I should also try to perform a little surgery on the 2nd one? I suppose time will tell.
