First grows

@TaraGrows how much of your nutrient bottles have been used? If you see my pictures at the top of this mine didn’t start too healthy. It will pull through. I wish I had extended seedling stage before nutrients were added. I think it was dispensing a little to much for such a small plant. That root looks strong I add hydroguard with every fill since that is what it is made for.

@Stephen just checking in - I submitted a ticket last night and haven’t received follow up. I’m not in any rush, but am holding off on following the advice here from @DanTom and @Osage (like buying a ph pen and/or Hydroguard) until I hear if it’s a machine/nute dispensing fix on Grobo side. Thanks again for all the help and support!

I would suggest one last thing. Check levels of nute bottles, if one hasn’t dispensed, ie #5, then the hose might just be pinched. Give that a try :+1::v:

I’m thinking water temp may be an issue

Water temp will cause root rot, which left unchecked, can lead to a multitude of problems. I’d feel the roots, if slimy and starting to smell, then def root rot. Need a drain and fill and add hydroguard

What I’ve been doing is chilling 1 gallon (4 litres) of water and leaving the other half at room temperature (put it in the fridge overnight). Thanks to @James for this golden nugget – hadn’t considered doing that originally.

When doing the drain/fill cycle, just use them as you normally would but when mixed this time it should get the temp down around 60 to begin with. That might help keep res temps a bit more in check.

Also removed the little square door at the bottom/back of the unit and have fans blowing across the back to add circulation down below, the air pump can add additional heat (that does not get vented) beneath the reservoir if that door is closed, and in my case that was enough to warm the reservoir.

After doing these things I’ve had a much easier time avoiding root rot. Room temps play a huge role here, but some of these other factors play a contributing part as I’ve found.

Don’t give up… it took me 4 grows to work out all the kinks and I’ve finally got one that might make it to the end this time (saved from near-death, so stunted but still alive).

I’m also using something other than hydroguard currently to keep my root rot in check. I’ll be posting about that after harvest if all turns out well.

To @grobo team: I understand that outlining the negatives and describing all the possible workarounds that people have done to get things working is not always desirable from a marketing standpoint, but not having this info on day 1 does lead to quite a bit of frustration. The time/effort involved in joining the forums and getting to know who to trust for info and re-explaining issues people have had in the past (and receiving everything from anecdotal evidence to “look how awesome my plants are, sorry about yours” etc) could be minimized for greater customer satisfation. TLDR; Somebody should really summarize a lot of these factors and fixes into a better getting started guide for users in order to facilitate more successful grows from the get-go.

Hey @vegetato

Thanks for the kind words. Although the cooling of the water worked at first or for the first few days after refill, I ultimately broke down and purchased a water chiller and external pump. What I found was the temps had risen a bit each day and the only way to guarantee a completely controlled environment was to buy a several hundred dollar chiller and cheap pump.

I am happy that you’ve gotten a solid grow going and that I somehow was able to help. Hopefully this positive streak continues for you. Post some pics when you get a chance! We all love funny animal videos and pictures of cannabis plants.

Cheers :beers:!

Hey all -

PH seems good.
Temperature is good.
Humidity is good.
Root is LOOONG with lots coming of the main.
But she seems sad; am I just delusional or does she look “weak”.

Currently on day 16 - doesn’t seem to be growing steadily anymore.

Thoughts?

Mike

Not a clear enough picture to access damage. She does look small and droopy though. Is your air stone and pump working? Looking at your picture of the roots it doesn’t appear to be on.

What are you using to check the pH? What’s the reading?

I just opened the bottom up and the pump wasn’t working again - this unit is 15 days old and I literally have to do something to it every day…the internet is always disconnecting, the pump is clearly defective, the light leak and noise and rattle that comes out of this box is like my grandparents old fridge… (which is cravy crazy the pump isn’t working lol

I know it’s a strange place to ask but does anyone have any experience returning a unit? This is WAY more trouble than the remote possibility of an ounces of cannabis.

I feel duped. Maybe not duped; maybe I just am not the type of customer who shouldn’t have bought this product “yet”.

Sorry about your unit!!! Did you put in a ticket to let customer service know? They will send out a new pump for you. In the meantime if your pump is all the way out you might wish to consider picking one up until they send you out a replacement If your afraid your plant is suffering.
Can I ask where on your unit your experiencing a light leak? I had one on the upper Left side of my unit, i used a magnet to bridge the gap. I can’t show you how much light comes out because my plant is asleep right now but here is a pic of the magnet pressing the side panel back in to seal the gap.

As far as the noise, you have to expect a little but some people have noticed their pumps touching the unit or its parts and have padded it to lessen the noise.
You may wish to talk with @Stephen, to see if he can trouble shoot the source of you wifi because others have been experiencing issues unrelated to their router and modem lately. Again I’m very sorry and hoping you won’t give up!

I’ve noticed at times that my box can be quite loud and rattle. One thing I noticed was when I opened the bottom door on the back of the unit the wires were vibrating against the machine causing the noise level to basically double. Once I moved them it did quiet down a bit. The fan in the top of the unit seems to have the same issue right now (although not as loud) but being as I am in a grow I don’t want to take the top off to adjust. Sorry to hear of your other issues!

Hey @Mike_Sampson,

You can return your unit within the first 30 days if you wish. I can assist you getting the unit to quiet down a bit, as @Bplatinum9 indicated above, some great troubleshooting tips.

I can also send you out a replacement airpump, have you submitted a ticket about it yet? I’m about to dig into them now.

Cheers,
Stephen

Hey @TaraGrows,

How is your battle with root rot? Did the Hydroguard arrive and is it helping?

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi @Stephen, thanks for checking in! Time to break out your 80s nostalgia memorabilia because I feel like I’m in an episode of Stranger Things. My girl is looking good, growing nicely

However, the Upside Down is just as slimy and root rotty as before.

Now, I’m super happy at the new growth of roots and a lot of it looks white. What are the professional opinions?

And as a second question, I extended early vegetation by 7 days, but would anyone say she might be ready for the next cycle? I don’t want her to veer too far off course and I’m not certain the differences between the two.

Again thanks so much for all the help and thoughts and positive vibes!

Are you sure it’s slimy? Smelly too? If not that may just be nute stain. If so get some hydroguard going right away, and get a bottle of revive!! Also recharge will help your roots explode. Apply all three and you should be good to go. Keep hydroguard and revive as part of your regular feeding schedule :+1::v:

@Osage I have incorporated Hydroguard into my feeding schedule(whenever water is changed I add it). What is the benefit of this recharge you are talking about? Do you have a link as to where it’s at? Does it help with yield?

Recharge is a beneficial bacteria, that helps with massive root development, thus enabling the plant to take up more nutes, and in turn get bigger and better yields. Can be used with any medium, and any nutes.
