That’s neat! I could see installing a small submersible pump in there prior to planting and runing the tube out like the air hose as well to drain. Just keepin the roots away would be the problem there. So maybe a inline pump like grobo has. Now I’m wondering if they make inline water pumps that can pump forward and reverse. One way to fill one to empty

Or maybe you could use something like this and connect it to your water level hose
To assist with draining and then either run it in reverse or flip the hoses to use for filling
